THE WORLD-BUILDER'S GUIDE TO DANCE AND AI - LINK Masters AI and Culture

Planning grant awarded - LINK Masters Stiftung Niedersachen und Volkswagen Stiftung

The project “The World-Builder’s Guide to Dance and AI” investigates how worlds are constructed and altered by moving agents, human and non-human, through diverse applications of AI. The interdisciplinary team combines perspectives from AI, choreography, anthropology and philosophy and comprises Anton Koch (Motion Bank, Hochschule Mainz), Daniel Bisig (Coventry University), Deva Schubert (freelance choreographer), Juan Felipe Amaya Gonzalez, Deborah Williams (University of Malta), Anna Pakes and Heike Salzer (University of Roehampton). Over the next six months, the team’s work will focus on four sub-projects engaging different kinds of worlds and involving dancers’ embodied agency in various ways: (1) mapping the conceptual worlds of choreography through data-driven workflows; (2) simulating worlds computationally from biological and physical principles; (3) creating speculative fictional choreography to enhance worlds generated in video game design; and (4) exploring the algorithmic and rhythmic parameters of folkloric worlds. Ultimately, the project aims to produce a World builder’s Guide to Dance and AI– a multi-dimensional platform sharing project insights and resources with artists, educators, students and future researchers interested in deploying AI to construct and explore worlds of their own.
